What Questions Do I Ask In a Job Interview?
You would be surprised how many job interviews we have conducted where we ask a candidate if they have a question for us, only to hear dead silence. Unless you have no interest in the job, you should always come to a job interview well prepared with at least 3-5 questions to ask the job interviewer(s). Not only does asking questions leave a positive impression with the employer but also confirms your interest in the position.
When asking questions, keep in mind not to ask questions where the answer is readily available on the web site or the topic has already been covered in the interview. Asking a question that has been covered in the job interview will not reflect well on you and this will show the employer that you were not paying attention and only wasting valuable time. Also, avoid asking about salary and benefits until those subjects are raised by the employer.
Here are some questions that you may consider asking in the job interview:
- What is a typical day for someone in this position?
- What are the day-to-day expectations and responsibilities of this job?
- Can you describe the company's management style?
- Describe the company's corporate culture?
- What are the company's values?
- How would you characterize the management philosophy of this company? Of the specific department?
- Does the organization support ongoing training and education for employees to stay current in their fields?
- What do you think is the greatest challenge facing the organization in the near future?
- What sorts of reward or recognition programs are available within the company?
- What sets this company apart from competitors? How do you retain good employees?
- What is the size of this company? How many locations?
- Is there a formal process for career advancement within the organization?
- What is the organization's plan for the next five years, and how does this department fit in?
- Could you explain your organizational structure?
- How will my leadership responsibilities and performance be measured? By whom?
- What particular computer equipment and software do you use?
- What kind of work can I expect to be doing the first year?
- How much guidance or assistance is made available to individuals in developing career goals?
- How much opportunity will I have for decision-making in my first assignment?
- Can you describe an ideal individual for this position?
- What is your organization's policy on transfers to other cities?
- When do you plan on making a decision on this position? When would you expect the successful individual to start?
